How do you calculate Vata, pitta, and Kapha in Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, a person’s body consists of three metabolic types that determine the physical, mental, and emotional quality of a human. These are known as “doshas.” The three doshas in the human body are known as “Vata,” “Pitta,” and “Kapha.” These three are the regulating forces of nature. The dosha of a person can help you to understand both his spiritual and physical attributes, about the person’s temperament, his likes or dislikes, his constitution, and other things. There are specific questions you can ask yourself to determine the dominant dosha in you.

1.       Physical characteristics such as your height, body frame, and the weight help in the determination of the dominant dosha. When it comes to weight change, do you find it hard to gain, lose, and maintain weight. The skin texture of humans is also a point of determination. What do your eyes look like? What is the texture of your hair? The texture of your teeth, your nails, all these factors can be the point of dosha determination in humans.

2.      In physical characteristics, the prominence of the bones, the texture of the hands, how the temperature of your body runs, what does the urine looks like, what is a form of your sickness, is it pain or inflammation, fever, skin irritations, or congestion, what are your likes and dislikes about the weather, all these points can be included.

3.      Next are personality traits. The way you speak, the general lifestyle such as being witty, competitive, active, busy, irritated, etc. are also the basis of determination of the dominant dosh in you. How do you behave when you are at your best or when you are at your worst, is also an essential factor in calculating your Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

4.      The food choices and choice of activity also matters a lot to decide the dosha of a person. When we talk about the preferences of activity what do you like? Do you like being active or you prefer activities with a purpose, for example, competition? Or you choose to sit around calmly? As far as the food choices are concerned, does your appetite varies daily, is it steady or is it regular?

5.      Another character is the way you walk. Do you walk quickly or often look towards the ground? Do you walk slowly, or do you walk with attention?

6.      What is your digestion capability? Do you tend to digest quickly, slowly, or moderately? Moreover, what happens to you when your digestion does not work correctly? Do you feel constipated, lethargic, or how often you face ulcers and heartburns?

7.      What is your favorite food? Do you prefer cold drinks over crunchy-salty? Or do you prefer both? Is your taste spicy, bitter, or sour? Do you like meat or fried foods? Or is your choice sweet, heavy, or creamy?

8.                 Talking about the stamina, do you get exhausted quickly, or do you have the capacity to handle various things at once?

9.                  Do you feel asleep easily, or do you struggle to sleep? Are you sleeping an average time or do you sleep sound and face difficulty while waking up?

10.              Mind and emotions are also a factor that plays a vital role in the determination of the dosha of a human. How often your mood changes, your performance under pressure, how do you make any decision, what is your attention span, your memory power is, how do you handle any project, how good or bad are you at keeping the friendships when it comes to money what are the ways you spend it, and how are your dreams, frequent, romantic, colorful, occasional, intense, or disturbed? All these questions will help you to know about your dominant dosha.

The nature of Vata is energetic and lively, whereas pitta is determined or strong-willed. Besides, Kapha dosh is said to be calm, steady, and thoughtful. Consider all these points mentioned above and match it with the nature of the doshas. The dosh that will receive the maximum number of responses will be the dominant dosha in you. Also, it is okay to get a dual dosha, such as Vata-Kapha, Pitta-Kapha, and Vata-Pitta.
